My Mission—Daejon South Korea Mission

I finally got around to scanning my mission photo’s. I wish I’d had a digital camera on my mission, that would have made it much easier. I would have taken more pictures too. For some reason I thought I took more pictures then I did. So here are the best ones. There’s kind of a lot here, it was hard to narrow it down, but I figured my parents would appreciate finally seeing some photo’s from my mission.

THE MTC –12 weeks learning the language. Companions with Sister Lurvey. The beginning of my mission—March 31, 2005

My companion Sister Lurvey

My district at the Temple. What a fun group of missionaries. I loved the fun we had in the MTC. All of my district went to the Seoul West Mission. I was the only one to fly out to my mission.

Studying Korean at the MTC. Memorizing a difficult language.

DAEJON –My first area. Served there for 11 weeks with Sister Anh EunJu.

Here’s the Mission Office

Sister Ahn EunJu, my first companion, and I outside the mission office. It was so hot and humid when I arrived in Korea.

View outside our apartment in my first area Daejon. We were on the 11th floor. There were lots of high rise apartments all around.

Sister Song and her family. A family I met on the streets in Daejon. She was later baptized. Great woman!

Sister Kim in Daejon. We met her from knocking on doors. She let us in and said she had been praying about what church to attend. She was later baptized. Sweet lady.

JEONJU – My second area. There for 13 weeks. Served with Sister Lee YouNa.

After a zone conference. President Nemrow, Sister Lee YouNa (my companion), Elder Hong (General Authority), and me.

The street market in JeonJu selling food.

Eating with the members after church in JeonJu. Every Sunday after church the members would eat lunch together. Delicious! Anchovies and Korean green chiles, roasted seaweed, kimchi, fermented soybean soup, and rice. Mmmmm! I miss that food!

JeonJu by our apartment on our way out for the day. It was turning fall and starting to get colder.

Sitting by ancient Korean buildings and temples in JeonJu.

Stake activity in JeonJu. The boys would walk around in a circle on one hand and spin this ribbon around with their head. Very cool looking.

Members in JeonJu doing a talent show. The women are all wearing traditional Korean clothing.

Pretty ancient Kings homes.

River in JeonJu.

Sis Lee YouNa playing the kiagum.

KWANGJU/NAJU – My third area. Served there for 9 months with Sister Lamoraux, Sister Beck GyoungHwa, and Sister Kim MiSun.

Sister Lamoraux (my next companion) and Sister Lee YoungHee. Nice lady we taught.

Church meeting house in KwangJu.

Maria, a lady from Russia that we taught in KwangJu.

Our apartment in KwangJu.

Me and Sister Beck Gyoung Hwa (next companion).

The church meeting place in Naju, a small town, was on the second story of this building. They broke ground for a church meeting house after my mission and now have a church building.

Rice fields in Naju. It took a 45 minutes bus ride to get to Naju, but it was a beautiful ride.

Sister Son BokJu. A member in Naju. Sweet college girl that I continue to correspond with through email.

Our District in KwangJu. Serving with Sister Kim MiSun. In my mission we never served with any companion more then 2 transfers (12 weeks). So it could be 6 weeks or 12 weeks. Well Sister Kim MiSun and I were lucky enough to serve together for almost 3 transfers.

KWANGJU/HWASOON, THE CITY SIDE, Served there for about 5 months with Sister Mulvey, Sister Pak JiYeon, and Sister Gunn.

Sister Mulvey and me serving in KwangJu. This was a cool artistic bridge next to the church building. We would talk to people as they crossed that bridge with our district.

KwangJu older homes. Most people live in high rise apartments. They don’t even really build single houses like this anymore. There’s just no room.

Sister Pyo Me Gyoung, a recent convert in KwangJu. We still keep in touch through email.

President and Sister Nemrow, Sister Beck Gyoung Hwa, Sister Kim MiSun, Sister Mulvey, during a zone conference.

Sister Missionaries in Kwangju. My companion is sister Pak JiYeon the second one in from the left. This was a split change.

Eating yummy food with Sister Gunn, my last companion.

Streets and shops in KwangJu.

View of the south side of KwangJu. Our apartment is off to the right, a small orange building. This is the river we would run next to every morning.

The shopping area in KwangJu. Always a busy place.

KwangJu Arch at night

Seoul on my way home.

President and Sister Nemrow at the end of my mission.

Seoul Temple ---The day before I came home--November 2, 2006

At the time of serving my mission it was a lot of work, but I loved it and love to think about the time I served there. I’m so grateful that I was able to serve with President and Sister Nemrow. He was a great mission president. Just what I needed. I’m grateful that I was able to serve in Korea. I’m also grateful for all of my companions. I got along well with all of them and feel I made eternal friendships. I loved the people, loved the food, loved the culture, loved the people I served with, and loved teaching the gospel of Jesus Christ. What a blessing it was for me to serve a mission. We taught a lot of great people and I know they will remember the message they heard and be blessed by living the gospel.
